EGP Committee to take part in Caucasus Regional
Conference on Post-Soviet Democracy in Tbilisi
The Committee of the European Green Party will be in Tbilisi, Georgia
from Thursday 29th to Tuesday December 4th. During their
visit, the Committee members will take part in a Regional Conference with the
theme of “Post
Soviet States-a difficult path towards democracy”. This
conference will be attended by delegates from Azerbaijan
and Armenia as well as Georgia,
including representatives from Green Parties in the region, environmental and
human rights NGOs, organisations specialising in conflict resolution and
political scientists. During their visit to Georgia, the members of the
Committee will hold a series of meetings with high-level Government
representatives and international diplomats to discuss the recent political
crisis in Georgia and the upcoming Presidential Election on January 5th
2008.
EGP Co-Spokesperson Ulrike
Lunacek said “We are very much looking
forward to this visit to Georgia as we European Greens are very concerned about
recent political developments in Georgia, in particular the brutal suppression
of demonstrations by police in early November , the declaration of a State of
Emergency and the crackdown on non-state-owned media. This visit will give us a
valuable opportunity to discuss the situation with politicians, NGOs and
diplomats in Georgia.
We are particularly pleased that we will be meeting George Baramidze, the
Georgian Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration and Vice Prime
Minister, Ambassador Terhi Hakala, Head of the OSCE Mission to Georgia and Ambassador Per Eklund, the Head of
the Delegation of the European Commission to Georgia. We would like to thank the
Georgian Greens for
their invitation to hold an EGP Committee meeting in Tbilisi and attend the regional conference on
democracy in Post Soviet States. ”
Sofia Sakhanberidze , a member of the EGP Committee and a member of the Georgian Greens, said “The
Georgian Greens are delighted to be able to welcome the EGP Committee to Tbilisi and we very much hope that during their visit ,
the members of the Committee will be able to get a clearer impression of the
current political situation in Georgia.”
