EGP Spokespersons support Monika Paca, Polish Greens’
candidate in election for Senate
The Spokespersons of the European Green Party today expressed their
enthusiastic support for Monika Paca, the Polish Green Party (Zieloni 2004) candidate as a senator
for the Silesia region in the upcoming
elections in Poland.

Lunacek said: “We very much hope that
Monika Paca is elected as a senator for the Silesia region on October 21st.
If elected, Monika can count on the support of Green politicians and experts in
a wide range of policy areas as she seeks to further the Green agenda of
environmental sustainability and social justice in the Polish senate. Now more
than ever, Poland needs
politicians like Monika; progressive and forward-thinking politicians who are
prepared to defend human rights and democracy in Poland at a time when they have
been seriously undermined by the current government.”
EGP Co-Spokesperson Philippe Lamberts continued:
“It
is particularly important that a Green representative is elected in the Siliesa
Region as this region has suffered a huge amount of environmental damage
because of the great concentration of heavy industry there. Silesia,
more than anywhere else in Poland,
is in urgent need of a Green politician like Monika who can lobby tirelessly
for the investment in modern technologies required to clean up the area and
prevent further environmental degradation. One specific issue where Monika
really intends to make a difference is that of the dumping of chemical waste in
a pit at a place known as Tarnowskie Gory. The chemical industry dumped
its waste there more then 100 years ago and up to now, local and national
governments have shamefully neglected their responsibility to decontaminate the
site so as to safeguard the health of the local population. We very much
hope that the voters in Silesia
vote for Monika Paca on October 21st so that she can defend their rights as
citizens, protect their environment and improve their quality of life”
