EGP criticises French Foreign Minister Kouchner for dangerous talk
of war with Iran
The Spokespersons of the European Green Party today
criticised the French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner for his statements this
week about Iran’s nuclear programme to the effect that “We have to
prepare for the worst: the worst is war.”
EGP Co-Spokesperson Philippe Lamberts
said: “The statement by Bernard Kouchner is extremely dangerous in that
it diverts attention away from finding a negotiated settlement to the current
dispute between Iran and the
international community over Iran’s
nuclear programme. His comments are particularly unhelpful at a time when the
United Nations’ chief nuclear weapons inspector, Mohamed ElBaradei, is
attempting to find a peaceful solution to the dispute.”
EGP Co-Spokesperson Ulrike Lunacek continued:
“We call on the 3 EU countries who have been taking a key role in this
dispute (France, the United Kingdom and Germany)
to concentrate their efforts on finding a diplomatic resolution of the standoff
with Iran
and to refrain from bellicose rhetoric. We also urge Iran to clearly and promptly answer
all the questions that the International Atomic Energy Agency have regarding
its nuclear programme.”
