European Greens congratulate Bremen Greens on reaching agreement to form
a coalition regional government
The Spokespersons of the European Green Party today
congratulated the Regional Green Party in Bremen for reaching agreement with the
Social Democrats (SPD) on a programme for the regional government. This
decision now has to be ratified by special conventions of both the German Greens (Bündis 90/ Die Grünen)
and the SPD.
EGP Co-Spokesperson Ulrike Lunacek said:
“Assuming that both parties obtain support for their coalition agreement
from their party conventions, the Greens will form part of a coalition
government in the Bremen
region. This is a significant achievement and marks the return of the German Greens
to regional government in Germany.
We are confident that this coalition will be followed by similar breakthroughs
in other regions of Germany.”
EGP Co-Spokesperson Philippe
Lamberts continued: “The Bremen
Greens’ negotiating team have been able to ensure that key Green policies
will be implemented by the next regional government. These include a commitment
to improve the ecological quality of the Weser River
and to extend its flood plain and a strategy to reduce CO2 emissions and energy
consumption by the region’s main energy provider, SWB. In terms of a
controversial proposal to a new coal-fired power station, the Greens secured a
commitment that the proposal will be subject to a stringent and transparent
feasibility study and that a panel of experts will be set up to deal with
arbitration of the disputes related to this proposal.”
The EGP Co-spokespersons concluded by congratulating Bremen Green Party Chairperson Susan Mittrenga
and the negotiating team of the Bremen Greens for the significant achievements
they made during the negotiations.
