EGP Spokespersons congratulate Finnish Greens on entering Government

The European Green Party spokespersons today congratulated their member party, the Finnish Greens ( Vihreät / De Gröna) , on entering government and for having already achieved approval for specific Green policies during the negotiations to form a coalition.

EGP Co-spokesperson PHILIPPE LAMBERTS said, “I would like to send our warmest congratulations to the Finnish Greens . In particular, I would like to congratulate the 2 new Green Ministers, TARJA CRONBERG, who is to be Labour Minister, and TUJA BRAX , who has been appointed Justice Minister. These are both extremely important ministries and I am sure that both women will make a great contribution to the Government programme while also furthering the Green agenda within government. In addition to these ministerial posts, it is also extremely important that a Green has been appointed to the post of Special adviser to the Prime Minister on Climate Change.”

Co-spokesperson ULRIKE LUNACEK added “We are delighted that the Finnish Greens have already been successful in influencing government policy. Specifically, they have managed to block the building of two highly controversial and environmentally destructive artificial lakes or reservoirs (a plan which the environmental movement in Finland has been opposing for years), they have initiated moves towards ecological tax reforms and have secured agreement for much needed reforms in the social welfare regulations. The latter is a significant step in the direction of the “basic income” which the Greens advocate and will continue to argue for.

Both spokespersons expressed disappointment that the new government’s energy Package included the possibility of approving Nuclear energy but were confident that the Greens would vigorously and publicly oppose any plans to build new Nuclear Plants and vote against any such proposals in Parliament and in Government, as the Finnish Greens have already said they will.

“The Finnish Greens now have a real opportunity to further the Green agenda, not only in  terms of the environment and energy policy ,but also in the crucially important areas of promoting greater social justice and equality . In Foreign affairs: The EGP is confident that with the Greens in government there will be no moving away from Finland’s non-aligned status and no application for membership of NATO” concluded LAMBERTS and LUNACEK.
