[EGP] EGP PRESS RELEASE 17.03.2007

PRESS RELEASE 17.03.2007

CHANGE YOUR MIND NOT YOUR CLIMATE

The European Green Party has called on all European Governments to take concrete measures to combat climate change .The EGP has again stressed, though, that Nuclear Energy can play no part in the fight against Climate Change.

Speaking at a Press Conference on the first day of the EGP´s 6th Council Meeting in Berlin,  whose theme is " CHANGE YOUR MIND NOT YOUR CLIMATE", EGP Co-Spokesperson ,ULRIKE LUNACEK said that Climate Change and Energy Policy will be one of the key topics addressed by over 240 participants at this weekend´s Council Meeting, as well as the need for continual reform of the EU.

ULRIKE LUNACEK went on to say," At last week´s EU Council in Brussels, the leaders of the EU agreed to cut CO2 emissions by 20% from 1990 levels by the year 2020. However, scientific analysis shows that a 30% reduction is what is needed to prevent the catastrophic consequences of Climate Change , and we will continue to put pressure on European governments until they commit to that."

Speaking at the same press conference, REINHARD BÜTIKOFER,Co-President of the German Greens said,´´ In the debate about the Constitutional Treaty, Climate Change and Energy Policy must be a top priority. Only if that is the case, can Europe take a leadership role in combatting Climate Change´´.

ULRIKE LUNACEK also referred to the debate on a future Consitutional Treaty and said it must not neglect social issues and the question of how to make EU procedures more democratic and give a more prominent role to civil society.

Former German Foreign Minister JOSCHKA FISCHER, will outline his views on the future direction of the EU in a keynote address to the Council Meeting on Friday evening.
